Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) – Practitioner Level

Second, Practitioner requires passing two additional Specialist exams at 70%+ each, on top of Fundamentals — Associate requires only the one exam. In effect, Practitioner asks you to prove both a stronger command of the full DMBOK and genuine depth in two disciplines of your choosing.

No, not as a separate step. There's no requirement to “achieve” Associate first and then separately work toward Practitioner — you're simply aiming for a higher score (70%+) on the same Data Management Fundamentals exam, plus two Specialist exams. If you happen to score in the 60–69% range on Fundamentals, you'll be awarded Associate certification automatically; if you clear 70%+ and later pass two Specialist exams at 70%+, you'll be awarded Practitioner. They're outcomes of the same pathway, not sequential hurdles.

According to DAMA International's own current requirements, there are no formal prerequisites for any CDMP exam, Practitioner included. Guidance suggests roughly two to ten years of industry experience as a helpful benchmark for this level, but — exactly as with Associate — this is explicitly described as a guideline only. It isn't assessed, and DAMA won't verify your experience before letting you register or sit the exams.

Entirely up to you — DAMA doesn't assign or restrict your choice. Yes, and this is one of the most important rules to understand before you start. Each passed exam is valid for three years from the date its badge is issued. If you're working toward Practitioner and your Fundamentals pass mark turns three years old before you've completed both Specialist exams, you can no longer use that Fundamentals result toward Practitioner — you'd need to retake it. Plan your Specialist exam timeline with this window in mind rather than letting years pass between exams.

All three exams follow an identical format: 100 multiple-choice questions, each with five answer options, to be completed in 90 minutes (candidates sitting the English as a Second Language version get an additional 20 minutes). Roughly half the questions are straightforward single-correct-answer items; the remainder present several plausible options where you need to identify the single best answer, not just eliminate obviously wrong ones. 

Yes — all CDMP exams, Fundamentals and Specialist alike, are open-book. You're permitted to reference your own copy of the DMBOK2 Revised Edition, either as a hard copy or a digital copy on a separate device (not both, and not visible on the same screen as your exam). This helps less than it sounds at Practitioner level specifically: a meaningful share of Specialist exam content tests applied, scenario-based reasoning across the whole DMBOK rather than facts you could simply look up under time pressure.

Fundamentals covers 14 topics: the 11 DMBOK knowledge areas, plus Data Management Process, Data Handling Ethics, and Big Data & Data Science. Four topics — Data Governance, Data Modeling and Design, Data Quality, and Metadata Management — each carry roughly 11% weighting on the exam, making them the heaviest-tested areas; Reference and Master Data Management and Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence each carry roughly 10%. It's worth noting that three of those four heaviest-weighted topics are also available as standalone Specialist exams, which is part of why they're popular choices for Practitioner candidates.

Each Specialist exam goes considerably deeper into one named discipline — for example, the Data Governance Specialist exam explores governance frameworks, stewardship models, and organisational design in far more depth than the single Data Governance section of Fundamentals. Importantly, Specialist exams still draw on the whole DMBOK rather than testing your chosen topic in isolation, since real data governance decisions inevitably touch quality, architecture, and metadata too — so preparation benefits from understanding how your specialism connects to the broader body of knowledge.

No test centre is required for any of the three exams. All CDMP exams are taken online through DAMA's exam platform (cdmp.info), hosted on the Canvas learning platform and proctored remotely by the Honorlock system. You'll need a laptop or desktop with a working webcam and microphone, and a quiet, undisturbed space. You can sit each exam anywhere, anytime, within its enrolment window.

Yes. Once you pass all three required exams at the Practitioner threshold through DAMA International, you'll hold the globally recognised CDMP Practitioner certification and digital badge issued directly by DAMA. Alongside that, Tezzonix Academy issues a certificate of training completion, useful for showing your structured preparation to an employer or for internal records. Note that DAMA issues formal certificates for Associate, Practitioner and Master level certifications specifically — not for individual Specialist exam passes on their own.
