DAMA is explicit that the certification levels are progressive in depth, not tied to job titles or organisational rank, so you don't need a “Data” title to start here.
According to DAMA International's own current certification requirements, no prior experience is required for CDMP Associate. There are no formal prerequisites for any CDMP exam. Some guidance suggests roughly six months to five years of industry exposure as a helpful (not mandatory) benchmark, but this is explicitly described as guidance only — it isn't assessed, and it won't block you from registering or sitting the exam.
All three levels share the same required exam — Data Management Fundamentals — but the level you earn depends on your score and, for the higher levels, additional specialist exams and experience. Associate requires just a 60%+ pass on Fundamentals. Practitioner requires 70%+ on Fundamentals plus two Specialist exams passed at 70%+, and suits professionals with roughly 2–10 years of hands-on experience. Master requires 80%+ on Fundamentals plus two Specialist exams passed at 80%+, plus a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience with your CV submitted for DAMA's review. You're never pressured to progress — plenty of professionals remain at Associate level indefinitely.
CDMP Associate is the first certification level. To achieve Practitioner, you need to meet the Practitioner score requirements in Data Management Fundamentals and two specialist exams. Master has higher score and experience requirements.
Your initial CDMP certification — at any level — is valid for three years. After that, DAMA International requires an annual renewal process to keep it active: paying an annual maintenance fee, submitting a Data Management Activity Attestation confirming your ongoing involvement in the field, and signing the current DAMA International Code of Ethics. This is a genuine point of difference from certifications like Scrum.org's, which carry lifetime validity with no renewal requirement at all.
It's open-book — a genuine point of difference from most professional certification exams, including the Scrum.org exams Tezzonix Academy also offers. You're permitted to reference your own copy of the DMBOK2 Revised Edition during the exam, either as a hard copy or as a digital copy on a separate device (not both, and not on the same screen as the exam itself). In practice this helps less than candidates expect — a large share of questions test applied understanding and scenario judgement, not lookup-able facts, so open-book access doesn't replace real preparation.

No test centre is required. All CDMP exams are taken online through DAMA's exam platform (cdmp.info), hosted on the Canvas learning platform and proctored remotely by the Honorlock system. You'll need a laptop or desktop with a working webcam and microphone, and a quiet, undisturbed space, since Honorlock monitors the session and can pause your exam if it detects something irregular. You can sit the exam anywhere, anytime, within the enrolment window.
The Data Stewardship programme is delivered online, so you can join from anywhere. Tezzonix Academy trains professionals internationally, with hubs in Kerala, India and Bergamo, Italy.
